Valrien grew up with a staunch Moralinternist upbringing in an upper-middle-class family. During their studies as an economics major, they decided to focus on the topic of poverty and gain a profound understanding of how poor people got into their situation and what they do to survive in it. They thought it would be best to observe this as closely as possible, so they decided to move into shared housing with fellow students in the poorest part of Revachol. They frequently engage in political debates with their flatmates, especially those leaning more toward the extremes. Valrien believes that they can make them understand, but is it possible that instead, it is Valrien who could see the error of their beliefs? They hope to keep the fact that they are actually quite rich hidden from their roommates, but they will find out sooner or later - and then what will Valrien do?

Ember’s child Rudi grew up in misery. Their parents had to work hard at the workshop, leaving them and their sibling Reine to grow up alone – and make trouble in the neighbourhood.
Rudi was a kid when their parent died in an accident at the factory; they also felt the injustice like Reine did, but they were younger, and their reaction was accordingly milder. What remained was the notion of WHO caused the incident (migrant workers). This was probably also related to their generally reserved mindset; Rudi is still in contact with Reine and often tries to calm them down and reconcile the estranged family. The games they play with the Fantasy Dreamers have helped them cope with it all.
Rudi still lives with their surviving parent, Ember, and their grandparent, Francis, and works at Schwenk’s workshop. They are not part of the Union yet but are a very good candidate.

Joan is the only heir of the noble von Bergen family. They truly believe in the superiority of their bloodline and the importance of aristocratic moral principles and traditions. They did try their best. But with their fragile health and timid nature, they were never up to it. Instead, they try to escape their terrible reality by dreaming of another life while avoiding making mistakes in front of their parents.
Joan’s life became a nightmare when their parent, Paris von Bergen, practically adopted Frank Baciu, a bully neighbour who was supposed to guide and toughen them.
More recently, an unexpected event imbued Joan with shameful dreams of a simple life in a united community, supporting and loving each other. Are these dreams compatible with their legacy, or must Joan choose between them? Can there be some form of noble rule and equality for all at the same time? Does noble blood even mean anything? And if not, are they any more than a pathetic, bullied, sickly wimp from a delusional family?

The name Krot sticks in Sasha’s throat. Sure, if their sibling had lived, if the family had stayed in Yugo-Graad, if their parent Matija hadn’t become a junkie, maybe then Sasha could have really been something in the gangster world. They make friends easily, friends who trust them almost immediately. This ability, far more than whatever nonsense about “alphas” Matija would ramble on about when the uppers met the vodka in their system, is what really makes someone the spider in a web of crime. In this life, however, it was Valja’s influence that stuck instead, and Sasha wants to use their charisma for something better. They talk a lot with their friends (and their first love, their true love) about politics, about philosophy, about independence and freedom, and they want that for themselves. First, though, they have to make a respectable name for themselves and have to become someone the bureaucrats would consider deserving of their own flat and a steady job away from their family. Sasha is always looking for a way to get ahead but only finds ways that harm the people they love; will they finally give in and exploit their relationships to get ahead, or let empathy rule their choices and stay tied down in La Cage?

When their dreams suddenly fizzled and died, something inside Darja broke. In the first few days after arrival, they were left in a state of utter despair, grieving because they might never again see the beloved sibling they left back home in Oranje. But then it was suddenly too much, and something changed. Darja continued working diligently and even starving sometimes to send a little money home without expecting letters in return. Bullied at the factory, Darja sought refuge in the Union, where they gradually built connections and some reputation. As Darja witnessed the problems in La Cage and kept thinking of their family in Oranje, they saw an opportunity to shape a better future, not just for themselves. In a difficult situation, Darja decided to try to find a glimmer of hope and positivity in everyday things, and while that was by no means easy, they somehow succeeded in that. Maybe even too much since now they sometimes even overlook the very grim and very real situation that the Du Toit household has found themselves in. But is the reality really worth it when it is so bleak?

Konrad is an innovator, a teacher, a guru, an annodic music prophet and a horrible, horrible person to actually run a music club.
A known figure of the Hardcore underground scene, Konrad has a strange way with music. While the others only listen, they really FEEL the music. The notes are words and self-vibing is a form of meditation. A producer who turns harsh life stories into sick beats and tries to find the real *themselves* with the music sounds hip and cool - until you need somebody to clean the floor, pay the bills or actually set up posters. Konrad has a posse of students that follow them around and help out, but...is this sustainable? Is this... is this... really hardcore?

Bragi has no conscious memories of the time before the travelling, but every now and then, they will wake with a cry, sweat dripping from their forehead and an uneasy feeling of loss in the pit of their stomach. They are an artist, and these dreams have fueled many drawings and paintings. Sometimes, they can almost make out a woman’s face in the drawings, but it always seems to remain elusive, just at the edge of awareness. When it’s been a while since one of their dreams, they will spend hours painting the swirling Pale as their family slowly traverses it. They have tried to recreate this flow of inspiration after they came to Revachol, but for now, they have struggled in vain.
