Avery is an environmental activist and a student at the local university. They have a heart of gold and would never hurt a living soul. They believe in grassroots movements and are full of hope. In their spare time, they strive to make their apartment and the rest of Revachol cleaner and more sustainable. They picked the People's Pile Disaster as a thesis topic, and they spend a lot of their time with those affected. They hope to bring attention to the impact this catastrophe had on the environment as well as those who, to this day, suffer from the consequences. Recently, faced with others' disinterest and thoughtlessness, Avery has been becoming increasingly desperate, even considering more forceful measures to get their point across. But how far are they willing to go?

Zacharie has worked hard their whole life, and they still do. An ordinary resilient worker, a symbol of pure diligence, who carefully nurtured their relationship to work and passed their ideals over to their children. They have gone through their share of rebellions, even against “those in power”, but all of these only led to more poverty or desperation. They were disappointed many times, but the biggest betrayal came after they helped with clearing the rubble after the People’s Pile nuclear plant disaster. In the end, nothing but the work really made sense. Their dissatisfaction with the young generation and other modern nonsense plaguing the La Rosa family is palpable. And given their age, there may not be much time left for Zacharie. But before their time comes, they plan to set some things right.

Kosmo has all sorts of medical experience, but they do not claim any degree. Even more obviously, they seem to have a lot of experience as a patient: old scars and disfigurations line their face and body. This is a bit ironic since Kosmo not only helps the good doctor with any practical medicine that's needed, but they also take great pride in fixing appearances. Their skill is so great that some people even think Kosmo is not only an aesthetic surgeon but nearly an artist in the ways of flesh.

After decades in La Cage, they are well connected when it comes to hobbies and pastimes, but there has never been any significant other and Kosmo's age is starting to show. People are even starting to suggest that they should find somebody, because maybe not this year, not the next one, but sometime in the near future, they might no longer be able to take care of themselves.

Ofelaš is of the Suru people of the very far north of Katla, and they are known for their ability to heal the minds of those who have gotten themselves lost. The stories of how they have helped people find their way out of the depths of their own minds and even out of the gripping claws of the Pale itself are numerous. How they do it, though, is unknown. Some say they just sit and talk; some say it involves chanted rituals and dancing naked under a pale moon. What they all agree on, though, is that Ofelaš is not someone one should cross lightly. They have a certain hard edge to their soft-spoken words, and the glint in their eyes promises terrible retribution to those who dare even think about hurting Ofelaš’s family and loved ones. At least in theory. Now, being forced to work for food and offer spiritual help for money, that old edge is sleeping somewhere inside. For now.

Hope is, of course, not their real name - or most likely not. They were the first person who came into La Cage and headed straight to the cellars and sewers. Instead of trying to make out some sort of living in the rooms and halls of the old hospital, they established their own little domain in the dark places and set the rules of the underground. And from there, they can sometimes help with problems that don't belong in the daylight - from plumbing to obtaining documentation. Hope made themselves the ruler of the cellars, indispensable to many, hated by most and shunned by nearly everyone. They, too, naturally have their sensitive, human side. And their own problems, among others, pyrrolidone addiction. But in the harsh conditions of the sewers, it is harder and harder not to let their empathy become a victim of their extreme survival instincts.
