Having a complicated relationship with your parents is quite normal at Elliot's age. However, it gets much worse when your parent is someone seen as the hero of La Cage, the only actual doctor operating in the old hospital and someone allegedly so humble that they don't even charge a reasonable price for their services.

Elliot is close to finishing their own medical degree, but their visits home are getting more and more fraught. They are bothered by the humble poverty that their parent is forcing them into and by the squalor and hopelessness all around. Elliot wants to live a good life and to find out what is what, and they are way past done with both the old doctor and the corrupt, impotent regime. They are an avid member of the Iron Cadence.

If Sterling was lucky for a slum kid, their child, Ardor, was luckier than most in La Cage. Born to relative comfort, they feel very entitled to their good fortune and their family’s position and determined to improve it. After finishing their Central Jamrock high school education, they came back home full of ideas about how to improve their parents’ struggling family business - mainly by focusing on the bottom line, cutting costs and not coddling the ungrateful riff-raff who work for them.
They persuaded their parent to put Ardor in charge of managing the day-to-day operations of the workshop, and since then, they have been gradually tightening the screws. They regularly clash with their parent and others in their family about their pragmatic, cutthroat strategies and have taken to occasionally going around their parent altogether - better to ask forgiveness than permission, after all.

Zair is deeply convinced that the world is a good, right place. Of course, not everyone might make it - but good things happen to good people. Just look at how Sterling, their parent, pulled themselves up by their bootstraps! While their sibling Ardor focused on business, Zair decided to follow their passion for the community and shaping hearts and minds, and became a teacher - they believe that words are often the greatest weapon. They love their job and see all the neighbourhood’s children as their own - and like a good parent, they are ready to separate the wheat from the chaff. Their smooth and caring nature makes them well-respected by the parents, and they work hard to ensure that good and deserving children will have the futures they should have. And the bad seeds, those whose parents are drunkards, immigrants or layabouts - well, Zair knows how to cleverly apply discipline and humiliation to teach them their place.
After all, what is so bad about a bit of a return to tradition? People knew how to do things back in the day.

Joan is the only heir of the noble von Bergen family. They truly believe in the superiority of their bloodline and the importance of aristocratic moral principles and traditions. They did try their best. But with their fragile health and timid nature, they were never up to it. Instead, they try to escape their terrible reality by dreaming of another life while avoiding making mistakes in front of their parents.
Joan’s life became a nightmare when their parent, Paris von Bergen, practically adopted Frank Baciu, a bully neighbour who was supposed to guide and toughen them.
More recently, an unexpected event imbued Joan with shameful dreams of a simple life in a united community, supporting and loving each other. Are these dreams compatible with their legacy, or must Joan choose between them? Can there be some form of noble rule and equality for all at the same time? Does noble blood even mean anything? And if not, are they any more than a pathetic, bullied, sickly wimp from a delusional family?

Frankie is the third and last child of the Baciu family, born from an unknown father. Because of her important job, their mother, Jacqueline, clearly neglected them. Frankie was raised the hard way by their two terrible step-siblings, Rory and Eli. It was an awful, miserable childhood.
Frankie turned out to be a bully themselves, their favourite victim being their neighbour and “worst friend” Joan von Bergen. Joan's parents, the local Suzerainist leaders Paris and Addison von Bergen, whom Frankie admires, practically adopted Frankie. After some time, Paris von Bergen slowly gave them the confidence and care they never got from their own family. Now, they’ll do whatever they can to make this new family proud of them. They seem to have been successful so far.
Their relationship with Joan is far more complex: Joan is, at the same time, their friend and their victim; Frankie wants to push them to be the heir Paris and Addison deserve, while also wishing to take their place. What will happen to Frankie if Joan succeeds in becoming a deserving heir?

Jaydon is the strong one of the Maier clan, and when we say strong, we mean “violent if needed, mostly just handling heavy objects”. On Tylor’s order, they often got their hands dirty to help the family business flourish. They have done everything they were asked so far, but nothing goes according to plan anymore - with their siblings or the one they love. Even the gambling has been going badly recently.
They just want the reward they are owed for their years of sacrifice, and to finally enjoy a joyful life. Are they not deserving of happiness? Did they really have to go through years and years of slowly building respect on the streets just to lose it because their siblings are too stupid?

When growing up, Ira was quite famous around the neighbourhood for being a bit too... softhearted. Naive. The target of quite a few pranks. Good friend, but never anyone's choice for a life partner. When the opportunity presented itself to the three Verhoog children (Kit, Ira, and Billie) to leave La Cage using the money earned through their family pawnshop, Ira didn’t hesitate. They left and maintained only sparse communication with the old gang, slowly transforming themselves. Ira managed to get a respectable job in insurance and finance and even start their own family. But all that came to a halt when their parent started having health issues. Ira spent more and more time in La Cage in the past year while the gap between them and their new life grew. And being sandwiched between a job, a new family, and caring for their parent, Ira had to find new ways to boost their energy.

Jordan lost their family when the Local Union Branch... transformed and took power. Jordan's parents were former Union heavy hitters and pushers - now, of course, remembered by most as nice and honest people. Elian let Jordan live and even supported their education, probably hoping that Jordan would just give up on La Cage and run away.

Jordan did not. Jordan returned to La Cage and started at the clinic as a nurse. However, the stress of the work, the unresolved trauma of their loss, and complicated feelings towards the gang running La Cage push them to the brink. And when Jordan has their sadder and _weirder_ moments, they like to turn to some very disturbing creative outlets. Mostly involving scalpels.

Huug wasn’t always called Huug, but the name they were given when the family picked them up instantly felt more real to them than their old one. That was a few years ago now, and Huug can only remember a few broken pieces and snippets of their life before the travelling. Their parents have told them that they are free to follow whatever path opens naturally before them, but they are afraid that this might mean having to leave the family, as they have seen several of their siblings have done before. Maybe they can find within themselves a calling to follow in one of their parents' footsteps? They have talked with Ofelaš, but they only said that with the amount of anger that Huug carries around, they might never be able to see their path clearly. They were not wrong. Huug is angry, and they are looking for a way to deal with it. Their dead-end situation is not helping.
